Sports Turf Maintenance: Keeping Your Pitch Match-Ready Year-Round

Artificial sports turf needs far less upkeep than natural grass, but “less maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” A pitch used daily by students, academy players, or club teams still needs a basic care routine to perform safely and look sharp for its full 8–10 year lifespan. Here’s exactly what that routine looks like.

If you’re still specifying a new surface, see our guide on choosing the right sports turf for schools and academies first — the right initial spec makes ongoing maintenance far easier.

Brushing: The Single Most Important Habit

Regular brushing keeps the pile fibers standing upright and redistributes infill evenly across the surface, especially in high-wear zones like goal mouths, center circles, and sidelines where players concentrate their movement. For a facility with daily use, brushing every 1–2 weeks keeps the surface performing consistently. Lower-traffic facilities can extend this to monthly.

A stiff-bristled push broom or a mechanical drag brush (for larger pitches) both work — the goal is simply to lift matted fibers back upright before wear patterns become permanent.

Infill Top-Up

Sand or rubber infill settles and compacts naturally over time under repeated foot traffic, particularly in the highest-use areas of a pitch. When infill drops too low, the turf loses cushioning and the fibers lose support, accelerating wear. Checking infill depth every few months and topping up as needed — especially before a new school term or competitive season — keeps performance and safety consistent.

Keeping Drainage Clear

Leaves, dust, and debris can gradually clog the drainage layer beneath the turf, which is what keeps a pitch playable straight after rain. A quick debris check and clearance, especially ahead of the rainy season, protects the investment you made in proper drainage during installation.

Dealing with Stains and Spills

Sports pitches see everything from mud tracked in to spilled drinks. Most surface marks rinse out with water; for anything greasy or stubborn, a mild detergent solution followed by a thorough rinse handles it without damaging the turf fibers.

Seasonal Deep Clean

For high-usage facilities — schools with hundreds of daily users, academies running multiple sessions a day — a periodic deep clean (rinsing the full surface and re-brushing thoroughly) once or twice a year keeps the pitch looking and performing like new, beyond the routine light maintenance.

When to Call in Professional Servicing

Most day-to-day maintenance can be handled by grounds staff with basic training, but a professional inspection every year or two is worth it to catch seam issues, uneven infill distribution, or drainage problems before they become costly repairs. If your pitch is due a check-up — or you’re noticing matting, pooling water, or visible wear — get in touch or call +254 726 132 696 and we’ll assess it.
